Gentle Activation

For later years, and for bodies that have been still too long.

Six weeks at an unhurried pace. Supervised movement that starts below what you can already do, hands-on work for the soreness that comes from being still rather than from being hurt, and warmth for joints that have stopped enjoying the mornings. Nobody is asked to keep up with anything.

This programme is proposed only if your assessment supports it.

What this programme aims to achieve

  • Stairs and getting out of a chair done with less thought
  • Less morning stiffness through the knees, hips and lower back
  • Movement you can continue at home, taught rather than prescribed

These are the aims, measured against your own baseline. They are not guarantees — outcomes depend as much on what you do between sessions as on what we do here.

What your programme may include

Depending on your assessment, your programme may include one or more of the following. Which of them apply to you, in what order and how often, is decided by your practitioner — not by this page.

  • Health Assessment

Objective measurement of the things we intend to change, recorded so progress can be shown.

  • Musculoskeletal Physiotherapy

Assessment-led rehabilitation for pain and restricted movement.

  • Therapeutic Manual Therapy

Structured hands-on soft tissue work for pain, stiffness and circulation.

  • Controlled Heat Application

Whole-body or local heat exposure for circulation, stiffness and relaxation.

  • Therapeutic Yoga & Movement

Condition-specific movement, breathing and relaxation practice.

  • Clinical Consultation

Structured history-taking and clinical reasoning to understand what is actually happening.

Read what each of these involves on Treatments & Therapies. The programme runs 6 weeks and totals around 24 sessions.

How this is personalised

  1. 1

    Your assessment sets the baseline

Vitals, posture, movement range and history are recorded before anything is proposed.

  2. 2

The plan is written for you

Which of the above apply, how many of each, and in what sequence — with a stated purpose for every element.

  3. 3

    It changes as you respond

We re-measure the same things partway through. If the numbers are not moving, the plan changes or we tell you it is not working.

Who this is for

Older adults, and anyone who has been largely inactive for a long stretch, who wants to move more without being handed an exercise plan and left to it.

Who this is not for

Unstable angina, uncontrolled blood pressure, a recent fall with unexplained cause, or acute joint swelling. We will ask, and we will send you to a physician first if any of those are present.

Twenty minutes. We measure, we explain what we found, and then we tell you honestly whether this programme is the right one — or whether another is.
